>Vredesactiviste en “peacemom” Cindy Sheehan is samen met 45 activisten in Washington opgepakt. Dit gebeurde na een gesprek met het Democratische parlementslid John Conyers.

De groep, met daarin ook ex-CIA-analist Ray McGovern, voerde actie om de Democratische partij ertoe te bewegen een afzettingsprocedure (impeachment) tegen vice-president Cheney en president Bush te starten. De partij weigert dat, al is niet iedereen binnen de partij het daarmee eens, zoals Democratisch presidentskandidaat Dennis Kucinich.

Toen Sheehan na het gesprek met Conyers naar buiten kwam, kondigde ze onder luid gejuich haar kandidatuur aan tegenover Nancy Pelosi, de Democratische voorzitter van het Huis van Afgevaardigden:

After an 80-minute meeting, Cindy emerged and told the activists that Conyers said “our only recourse is elections,” and the activists groaned. Cindy announced she will run against Pelosi because she and Conyers haven’t “stepped up,” and the activists cheered. Rev. Yearwood is giving a fired-up speech and activists are crowding in to Conyers’ office for the sit-in.

Cindy Sheehan uitte onlangs harde kritiek op Pelosi,vanwege haar steun voor de machtige lobbyclub AIPAC.

“I will run against you and I will give you a run for your money,” challenged Sheehan.

Sheehan slammed Pelosi as a warmongering elitist who lives in a mansion on a hill and is completely out of touch with her electorate, as well as a major supporter of AIPAC, a group which has expressed its explicit support for an attack on Iran.

“You can’t have allegiance to two countries when you’re a lawmaker in one of those countries,” said Sheehan, adding that many politicians put America’s best interests second behind Israel.

Arrestatie

Om kwart voor vier ’s middags, plaatselijke tijd, werden vandaag de actievoerders gearresteerd.

Geïntimideerd was de activiste allerminst door de arrestatie: Sheehan noemde, kennelijk vooruitlopend op haar run voor onafhankelijk presidentskandidaat, het politiebusje waarin ze werd afgevoerd haar “campaign bus.” (campagnebus).

Op dit moment is nog niet bekend of de groep weer is vrijgelaten.
