>Geen tweede Irak in Iran! Krijgt Ron Paul gelijk?

Het Republikeinse Congreslid Ron Paul waarschuwt voor een nieuw Gulf Of Tonkin-incident, als pretext voor een oorlog tegen Iran. (het “incident” dat de Vietnam-oorlog gestart zou hebben. De tweede aanval door Noordvietnamezen, als gevolg waarvan president Johnson vergeldingsacties liet uitvoeren, blijkt echter nooit te hebben plaatsgevonden).

Dit is zo’n beetje het belangrijkste wat Ron Paul zegt:

“I am concerned, however, that a contrived Gulf of Tonkin- type incident may occur to gain popular support for an attack on Iran.”

De Britse premier Tony Blair zegt, naar aanleiding van de arrestatie van 15 Britse marinemensen in, volgens Iran én de Britse ex-diplomaat Craig Murray, Iraanse territoriale wateren:

Blair: Iran must free naval prisoners in days

Rest de vraag: en zo niet, wat dan? Intussen roept de Venezolaanse president Chavez de wereld op om een eventuele oorlog tegen Iran te stoppen. In de Russische pers zou een artikel zijn verschenen, over de plaats en tijdstip van een eventuele aanval. En acteur/activist Sean Penn schrijft in een vlammende open brief aan Bush:

“You want to rattle sabers toward Iran now? Let me tell you something about Iran, because I’ve been there and you haven’t. Iran is a great country. A great country. Does it have its haters? You bet. Just like the United States has its haters. Does it have a corrupt regime? You bet. Just like the United States has a corrupt regime. Does it want a nuclear weapon? Maybe. Do we have one? You bet. But the people of Iran are great people. And if we give that corrupt leadership, (by attacking Iran militarily) the opportunity to unify that great country in hatred against us, we’ll have been giving up one of our most promising future allies in decades. If you really know anything about Iran, you know exactly what I’m referring to. Of course your administration belittles diplomatic potential there, as those options rely on a credibility and geopolitical influence that you have aggressively squandered worldwide.”

Verder wordt ook gewaarschuwd voor mogelijke terreuraanslagen door (het door Iran gesteunde) Hezbollah. Wáár? In Zuid Amerika, terwijl in Noord-Amerika de messen geslepen worden.

Let overigens op het effect op de olieprijs, voortvloeiend uit de huidige oplopende spanning.

Ik zeg: tijd om het weer eens over “geplande verontwaardiging” te hebben:
