What does this have to do with anything? Well, first of all, the sheets and pages of information on USS Jimmy Carter’s<\/span> multi-mission capabilities have all disappeared off the US Navy’s sites. Even the commissioning announcement at Commander Submarine Group Two is gone.<\/p>\n

Internet services in Qatar have been seriously disrupted because of damage to an undersea telecoms cable linking the Gulf state to the UAE, the fourth such incident in less than a week.<\/span> Qatar Telecom (Qtel) said on Sunday the cable was damaged between the Qatari island of Haloul and the UAE island of Das on Friday.<\/span> The cause of damage is not yet known, but <\/span>ArabianBusiness.com<\/em> has been told unofficially the problem is related to the power system and not the result of a ship’s anchor cutting the cable, as is thought to be the case in the other three incidents.<\/span> <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Well actually, there is no evidence that ships anchors did anything of the sort. In fact, Egypt says ships did not<\/span> sever the fiber-optic cables<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I was skeptical, at first, of speculation<\/a> over the cutting of two cables linking the Middle East with the Internet, which had it as part of some Vast Neocon Conspiracy to isolate the region prior to a US military assault. However, when two more<\/cite><\/a> cables \u2013 this time, in the Persian Gulf \u2013 were mysteriously cut, I began to wonder …. <\/p>\n

In a piece headlined “Cable cutter nutters chase conspiracy theories<\/a>,” The Register<\/cite> goes out of its way to laugh off the prospect that what we are witnessing is a military operation, or the prelude to one, sniffing “there’s little more than suspicions to work with” since we’ve yet to reach the damaged cables. Yet, given the sort<\/a> of government we are dealing with<\/a> \u2013 a regime that lied us into one war<\/a>, and is not-so-subtly<\/a> trying to finagle<\/a> us into yet another one \u2013 why shouldn’t we be suspicious? We’d have to be crazy not to be. <\/p>\n

The Economist<\/cite> follows suit<\/a>, sneering at “internet conspiracy theories” and denouncing the whole brouhaha as an “online frenzy” that is “way out of line.” Yet one has to wonder: four<\/cite> cable cuts in the past week? I’m with Steven Bellovin, a computer science professor at Columbia University, who avers<\/a>: <\/p>\n

“As a security guy, I’m paranoid, but I don’t understand the threat model here. On the other hand, four accidental failures in a week is a bit hard to swallow, too. Let’s hope there will be close, open examination of the failed parts of the cables.”<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
