De Verenigde Staten hebben een Isra\u00eblisch verzoek afgewezen om het land wapens te leveren die het goed zou kunnen gebruiken bij een eventuele aanval op de atoominstallaties van Iran. Dat heeft de Isra\u00eblische krant Haaretz woensdag bericht. <\/span>De Pers<\/span><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a>Niet dat ze ook maar iets tekort komen<\/a> trouwens, qua wapens. Inclusief nucleaire <\/span>massavernietigingswapens<\/a>….<\/span><\/p>\n

Overigens bouwt zich, zoals<\/span> eerder<\/a> gemeld, nog steeds een enorme <\/span>armada<\/a> op richting <\/span>Iran<\/a>, mogelijk voor een<\/span> zeeblokkade. <\/a>Op <\/span>Uruknet <\/a>is zojuist een update verschenen over deze vloot. <\/span><\/p>\n

UPDATE 14 AUGUSTUS: <\/span>Een woordvoerder van het Amerikaanse Department of Defense ontkent dit<\/a>. Althans: hij ontkent dat er sprake is van een mogelijke zeeblokkade tegen Iran.<\/p>\n

“As a matter of policy we do not discuss current or future ship’s movements. However, I can tell you that reports of an alleged naval blockade of Iran are false,” said Lt.-Col. Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for the assistant secretary of defense for public affairs.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Het bestaan van de armada op zich wordt niet ontkend, noch bevestigd. Een opmerking als <\/span><\/p>\n

“We routinely rotate deployed naval forces in the USCENTCOM area of responsibility to maintain our commitment to promoting security and stability in the region,” <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

zegt wat dat betreft ook weinig. <\/span><\/p>\n

Wat betekent dit? Wellicht houdt Washington er rekening mee dat Isra\u00ebl toch uit eigen beweging een aanval op Iran zal uitvoeren, terwijl de Amerikanen kennelijk voorlopig van een aanval af willen zien<\/a>. Wetende dat Isra\u00ebl vervolgens waarschijnlijk een Georgi\u00eb-scenario<\/a> te wachten staat, zal men de vloot paraat houden om Isra\u00ebl te hulp te schieten. Zoals beloofd<\/a>. Ook Debka suggereert dit.<\/p>\n

Yelamdenu<\/a> wijst ons op de mogelijkheid om een online-petitie tegen een Iran- oorlog te tekenen.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Een andere mogelijkheid is dat er met de militaire opbouw geanticipeerd wordt op stijgende onrust in Pakistan<\/a>, zeker nu de positie van Musharraf<\/a> onzeker is geworden.<\/span> <\/span>Ook de snel verslechterende verhouding tussen Pakistan en India<\/a> kan een rol spelen.<\/span> <\/span>Maar dan nog: hoe logisch is het dan om naar de Perzische Golf<\/a> te varen?<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Het “beschermen” van de Golf tegen een blokkade d\u00f3\u00f3r Iran lijkt meer voor de hand te liggen, <\/span>waarbij genoteerd moet worden dat Iran <\/span>die blokkade dreigt in te stellen in het geval van een aanval op het land<\/a>.<\/span>
<\/span>
Het wachten is op betrouwbare informatie over de locatie van de schepen.<\/span><\/p>\n

UPDATE 15 AUGUSTUS 2008: <\/span><\/span>Michel Chossudovsky heeft zijn artikel op Global Research, getiteld <\/span>“Naval Blockade” or All Out War?<\/a> gecorrigeerd, naar aanleiding van ontkenningen over de armada:<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortly after this article was released on August 13, US military sources as well as Stratfor<\/a> (a Strategic Studies Think Tank) stated that the various press reports (UPI, Middle East Times, Kuwait Times, Debka) regarding the naval deployment to the Middle East were incorrect.<\/p>\n

According to the press reports (see UPI, August 11, 2008), the war ships involved in the “Operation Brimstone” war games off the US North Atlantic coast, had set sail for the Middle East. This information is apparently incorrect, according to the US Navy and Stratfor. <\/em> <\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the Kuwaiti government had activated emergency procedures based on the information pertaining to a major naval deployment in the Persian Gulf. <\/em><\/p>\n

Based on the movement and location of USS carrier and expeditionary strike forces, the Bush administration has not decided to carry out a naval surge directed against Iran immediately following the conduct of the North Atlantic War Games, <\/em><\/p>\n

T<\/em>he eventuality of a naval blockade directed against Iran is nonetheless being considered by the Pentagon. In fact, <\/em>the naval blockade initiative is supported by a bill which was launched in the US Congress in late May. (See below for details). <\/em><\/p>\n

We have checked the most recent information regarding the movements and location of the various USS Carrier and Expeditionary Strike Groups. <\/em><\/p>\n

Congressional Initiative <\/b><\/p>\n

The naval blockade against Iran, which is tantamount to a declaration of war is a bipartisan project, which has tacitly been endorsed by the Democrats. In May 2008, a bill was introduced in the House of Representatives (H.CON. RES 362) that called for the enforcement of an all out economic blockade, including the encroachment of trade and the freeze of monetary transactions with the Islamic Republic: <\/p>\n

“The President [shall] initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran ….<\/em> prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials<\/strong> not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran’s nuclear program<\/span>.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“[H. CON. RES. 362] urges the President, in the strongest of terms, to immediately use his existing authority to impose sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran, … international banks which continue to conduct financial transactions with proscribed Iranian banks; …<\/em> energy companies that have invested $20,000,000 or more in the Iranian petroleum or natural gas sector in any given year since the enactment of the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996<\/strong>; and all companies which continue to do business with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.”<\/em> (See full text of H.CON RES 362) <\/a>(emphasis added)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
