13 augustus 2008 –<\/span> Aangezien de ontwikkelingen in en rond de <\/span>Kaukasus<\/a> elkaar bijzonder snel opvolgen, heb ik een thematische <\/span>feed<\/a> samengesteld uit zeer veel wereldwijde bronnen. <\/span>Laatste goede nieuws is dat Rusland de strijd gestaakt heeft.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lang niet alle berichten in de feed vertegenwoordigen mijn kijk<\/a> op de zaak. Zie het dus als een poging en een mogelijkheid om het conflict vanuit diverse standpunten te benaderen. De waarheid ligt z\u00e9ker niet bij CNN<\/a>, niet bij de NOS, niet bij de Volkskrant<\/a> en vast ook niet geheel bij Russia Today<\/a>, maar ergens tussen alle, voornamelijk westerse, propaganda<\/a> in.<\/p>\n

Wat in ieder geval waar is, is dat er een cameraman van RTL Nieuws is omgekomen<\/a>, naar verluidt bij een Russisch bombardement op Gori. Tragisch. Rusland ontkent<\/a> echter de stad te hebben gebombardeerd…Getuigen in Gori ontkennen<\/a> zelfs een bombardement te hebben gezien. Mysterie.<\/p>\n

Hoe dan ook: het lijkt me dat de Georgische president <\/span>M<\/span>ikhail Saakashvili<\/span><\/a> zich behoorlijk in de steek gelaten zal voelen, door zijn <\/span>NATO<\/a>-vrienden, de <\/span>VS<\/a> en <\/span>Isra\u00ebl<\/a>.<\/span> Vooral omdat hij dit gevaarlijke avontuur nooit had kunnen starten<\/a> zonder toestemming uit Washington<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hij heeft duidelijk zijn hand overspeeld, door te gokken<\/span><\/a> dat de westerse wereld(de NATO) wel zou komen helpen als hij het opstandige Zuid-Osseti\u00eb<\/a> zou aanvallen. Kennelijk dacht hij dat de Russen niet zo snel zouden reageren. Een feit waar ook de Amerikaanse legertop door verrast was.<\/a> Maar de Russen waren voorbereid<\/a> op de geplande<\/a> Georgische agressie<\/a>. En alle training en bewapening door VS, Nato en Isra\u00ebl heeft geen deuk in een pakje boter geslagen. Maar wel tot gruwelijke oorlogsmisdaden<\/a> geleid.<\/p>\n

Mijn eerste indruk is dat de wereld van geluk mag spreken<\/a> dat er kennelijk toch enkele verstandige adviseurs rondlopen in Washington en Moskou, die het hoofd koel hebben gehouden.<\/span><\/p>\n

En dat <\/span>Medvedev<\/a> niet doordrukt en Rusland de strijd lijkt te hebben <\/span>be\u00ebindigd<\/a>, nu, naar eigen zeggen, de veiligheid van Russische peacekeepers en burgers in Zuid Osseti\u00eb weer hersteld<\/a> is.<\/span> Medvedev heeft inmiddels een voorstel tot staakt-het-vuren aanvaard<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wellicht een min of meer positieve uitkomst van dit onaanvaardbaar risicovolle<\/a> conflict: Mogelijk zal een oorlog tussen de VS\/Isra\u00ebl en Iran<\/a><\/span> <\/a>nu minder waarschijnlijk worden, aangezien<\/span> <\/span>Rusland heeft laten zien zich niet zomaar opzij te laten zetten in oorlogssituaties, en er IS geen reden om aan te nemen dat Iran, in geval van Amerikaans\/Isra\u00eblische agressie<\/a>, geen hulp geboden <\/a>kan worden vanuit Rusland.<\/span> Dat is: als Isra\u00ebl zich inhoudt.<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/span> De huidige situatie rond Georgi\u00eb zal gevolgen moeten hebben voor een eventuele Georgische toetreding tot de Navo, en er zal internationaal onderhandeld moeten worden over een eerlijke verdeling<\/a> van de energie-infrastructuur<\/a><\/span>. <\/span>Er loopt, namelijk een belangrijke pijplijnroute<\/a> door Georgi\u00eb. Hoe belangrijk deze is blijkt hieruit<\/a>.<\/span> <\/span><\/a>BP heeft vandaag als “voorzorgsmaatregel<\/a>” een van de leidingen afgesloten<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Voorlopig lijkt het erop dat de Koude Oorlog<\/a>, met opnieuw olie als inzet, geheel in ere is hersteld. Belangrijk is ook dat er door de internationale gemeenschap naar de wensen van de inwoners van Noord-en Zuid-Osseti\u00eb<\/a> wordt geluisterd, <\/span>alsmede die van Abchazi\u00eb<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

WAT VOORAF GING:<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

De kwestie <\/span>Iran<\/a> (of eigenlijk Isra\u00ebl\/VS-haviken op <\/span>rooftocht<\/a>) krijgt een nieuwe dimensie, in de vorm van de opmars<\/a> van een enorme Amerikaanse zeemacht richting de Perzische Golf.<\/span> Tegelijkertijd dreigen Rusland en Zuid-Ossetische militanten in een full blown war te raken met door Amerikanen<\/a> getrainde Georgische<\/a>, en wellicht Amerikaanse<\/a> troepen. En wie startte de oorlog<\/a> eigenlijk?<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

In het onrustige Kaukasusgebied hebben afgelopen maand aan de ene kant Russische troepen en aan de andere kant Georgische en Amerikaanse eenheden elk meerdaagse militaire manoeuvres uitgevoerd.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Georgi\u00eb namen ongeveer 1.000 Amerikaanse soldaten aan de geplande militaire oefening ‘Immediate Response 2008’ (Snelle Reactie) deel, aldus het ministerie van Defensie in Tbilisi. In de Russische Noord-Kaukasus oefenden 8.000 soldaten onder andere voor een mogelijke inval in Georgi\u00eb, indien het daar in de afvallige gebieden Abchazi\u00eb of Zuid-Osseti\u00eb tot oorlog komt.<\/span> Link<\/a><\/p>\n

We mogen echt hopen dat er een aantal mensen aan de knoppen hun hoofd koel houden.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dit conflict, samen met de regionale onrust rond Iran<\/a> en <\/span>Pakistan<\/a>, kan potentieel uitgroeien tot v\u00e9\u00e9l meer<\/a> dan een Amerikaans-Russisch proxy-oorlogje. <\/span>Waarom? Hierom!<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Helaas ziet het er niet best uit, gezien de<\/span> Europese<\/a> en <\/span>Amerikaanse houding<\/a> ten opzichte van de Isra\u00eblische dreiging richting Iran, en gezien de <\/span>algehele mobilisatie in Georgi\u00eb<\/a>. En omdat Georgi\u00eb een<\/span> vazalstaat<\/a> van de neocons in Washington is. Pikant detail: Georgi\u00eb maakt gebruik van Isra\u00eblische adviseurs, aldus het pro-Isra\u00eblische <\/span>DebkaFiles<\/a>. Maar ook van Amerikaanse hulp, en dan is er meestal wel een (Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan-)<\/span> pijplijn<\/a> in de buurt:<\/span><\/p>\n

Georgian forces, trained and equipped by the Pentagon and the U.S. government, killed 10 Russian peacekeepers early this morning in a provocation attack that has escalated into military conflict, but the subsequent corporate media coverage would have us believe that the U.S. and NATO-backed client state Georgia is a helpless victim, when in actual fact a far more nuanced geopolitical strategy is being played out.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

DEBKAfile\u2019s geopolitical experts note that on the surface level, the Russians are backing the separatists of S. Ossetia and neighboring Abkhazia as payback for the strengthening of American influence in tiny Georgia and its 4.5 million inhabitants. However, more immediately, the conflict has been sparked by the race for control over the pipelines carrying oil and gas out of the Caspian region.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Russians may just bear with the pro-US Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili\u2019s ambition to bring his country into NATO. But they draw a heavy line against his plans and those of Western oil companies, including Israeli firms, to route the oil routes from Azerbaijan and the gas lines from Turkmenistan, which transit Georgia, through Turkey instead of hooking them up to Russian pipelines.<\/p>\n

Massive US Naval Armada Heads For Iran<\/a> <\/h3>\n
Operation Brimstone ended only one week ago. This was the joint US\/UK\/French naval war games in the Atlantic Ocean preparing for a naval blockade of Iran and the likely resulting war in the Persian Gulf area. The massive war games included a US Navy supercarrier battle group, an US Navy expeditionary carrier battle group, a Royal Navy carrier battle group, a French nuclear hunter-killer submarine plus a large number of US Navy cruisers, destroyers and frigates playing the “enemy force”.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The lead American ship in these war games, the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN71) and its Carrier Strike Group Two (CCSG-2) are now headed towards Iran along with the USS Ronald Reagon (CVN76) and its Carrier Strike Group Seven (CCSG-7) coming from Japan.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They are joining two existing USN battle groups in the Gulf area: the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN72) with its Carrier Strike Group Nine (CCSG-9); and the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) with its expeditionary strike group.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Likely also under way towards the Persian Gulf is the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) and its expeditionary strike group, the UK Royal Navy HMS Ark Royal (R07) carrier battle group, assorted French naval assets including the nuclear hunter-killer submarine Amethyste and French Naval Rafale fighter jets on-board the USS Theodore Roosevelt. These ships took part in the just completed Operation Brimstone.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The build up of naval forces in the Gulf will be one of the largest multi-national naval armadas since the First and Second Gulf Wars. The intent is to create a US\/EU naval blockade (which is an Act of War under international law) around Iran (with supporting air and land elements) to prevent the shipment of benzene and certain other refined oil products headed to Iranian ports. Iran has limited domestic oil refining capacity and imports 40% of its benzene. Cutting off benzene and other key products would cripple the Iranian economy. The neo-cons are counting on such a blockade launching a war with Iran.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Various other US Navy warships and submarines and support ships. The following USN ships took part (as the “enemy” forces) in Operation Brimstone and several may join in:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The USS Iwo Jima and USS Peleliu Expeditionary Strike Groups have USMC Harrier jump jets and an assortment of assault and attack helicopters. The Expeditionary Strike Groups have powerful USMC Expeditionary Units with amphibious armor and ground forces trained for operating in shallow waters and in seizures of land assets, such as Qeshm Island (a 50 mile long island off of Bandar Abbas in the Gulf of Hormuz and headquarters of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The large and very advanced nature of the US Naval warships is not only directed at Iran. There is a great fear that Russia and China may oppose the naval and air\/land blockade of Iran. If Russian and perhaps Chinese naval warships escort commercial tankers to Iran in violation of the blockade it could be the most dangerous at-sea confrontation since the Cuban Missile Crisis. The US and allied Navies, by front loading a Naval blockade force with very powerful guided missile warships and strike carriers is attempting to have a force so powerful that Russia and China will not be tempted to mess with. This is a most serious game of military brinkmanship with major nuclear armed powers that have profound objections to the neo-con grand strategy and to western control of all of the Middle East’s oil supply.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Russian Navy this spring sent a major battle fleet into the Mediterranean headed by the modern aircraft carrier the Admiral Kuznetsov and the flagship of its Black Sea Fleet, the Guided Missile Heavy Cruiser Moskva. This powerful fleet has at least 11 surface ships and unknown numbers of subs and can use the Russian naval facility at Syria’s Tartous port for resupply. The Admiral Kuznetsov carries approximately 47 warplanes and 10 helicopters. The warplanes are mostly the powerful Su-33, a naval version (with mid-air refueling capability) of the Su-27 family. While the Su-33 is a very powerful warplane it lacks the power of the stealth USAF F-22. However, the Russians insist that they have developed a plasma based system that allows them to stealth any aircraft and a recent incident where Russian fighters were able to appear unannounced over a US Navy carrier battle group tends to confirm their claims. The Su-33 can be armed with the 3M82 Moskit sea-skimming missile (NATO code name SS-N-22 Sunburn) and the even more powerful P-800 Oniks (also named Yakhonts; NATO code name SS-N-26 Onyx). Both missiles are designed to kill US Navy supercarriers by getting past the cruiser\/destroyer screen and the USN point-defense Phalanx system by using high supersonic speeds and violent end maneuvers. Russian subs currently use the underwater rocket VA-111 Shkval (Squall), which is fired from standard 533mm torpedo tubes and reaches a speed of 360kph (230mph) underwater. There is no effective countermeasures to this system and no western counterpart.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A strategic diversion has been created for Russia. The Republic of Georgia, with US backing, is actively preparing for war on South Ossetia. The South Ossetia capital has been shelled and a large Georgian tank force has been heading towards the border. Russia has stated that it will not sit by and allow the Georgians to attack South Ossetia. The Russians are great chess players and this game may not turn out so well for the neo-cons.<\/span> (vetgedrukt door mij-J.)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kuwait has activated its “Emergency War Plan” as it and other Gulf nations prepare for the likelihood of a major regional war in the Middle East involving weapons of mass destruction.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
